Wer steckt eigentlich hinter der Right Livelihood Foundation? Wie werden die PreisträgerInnen des Right Livelihood Award ausgewählt? Und warum braucht jede_r Stockholmbesucher_in ein Kirschblütenfoto?

Ende April hatte ich die Möglichkeit bei meinem Besuch in der schwedischen Hauptstadt diesen und anderen Fragen auf den Grund zu gehen. Ich konnte für zwei Tage im Büro der Right Livelihood Foundation einen Blick hinter die Kulissen werfen, einen Streifzug durch Regale voller Büchern von und über inspirierende Persönlichkeiten machen und die herzlichen MitarbeiterInnen und Praktikantinnen kennen lernen.

Es war spannend zu sehen, wie der Prozess des Vorschlags und der Evaluation von KandidatInnen für den Right Livelihood Award verläuft. Wusstet ihr, dass ihr alle einen für euch besonderen Menschen vorschlagen könnt? Es ist beeindruckend welche vielfältigen Aufgaben dieses überschaubare Team stemmt – damit durch den Preis überall auf der Welt Menschen ermutigt und in ihrem Engagement bestärkt werden.

Neben meiner Bewunderung für die Hingabe und das Herzblut, mit welcher das Team bei der Arbeit ist, sind es die kleinen Dinge, die mir in Erinnerung geblieben sind: der prall gefüllte Obstkorb für alle, eine Gitarrenstunde am Arbeitsplatz und Anekdoten von Aserbaidschan.

Während der gemeinsam mit dem ganzen Team verbrachten Mittagspause, bekam ich zudem Eindrücke von schönen Stockholmer Cafés, Hippvierteln und dem besten Wrap der Stadt!

Who are the people behind the Right Livelihood Foundation? How are the Laureates of the Right Livelihood award selected? And why does every visitor of Stockholm needs a cherry blossom picture?

During my Stockholm visit at the end of April I had the chance to get at the bottom of these and other questions. For two days I was able to look behind the scenes at the office of the Right Livelihood Foundation, to ramble around the shelves packed with books from and over inspiring personalities and to get to know the cordial staff members and interns.

It was fascinating to see how the process of proposal and selection of candidates for the Right Livelihood Awards runs. Did you know that all of you could propose a for you special person? It is impressing how many various tasks this small team is handling – in order to encourage people with the price all over the world and to strengthen them in their actions.

Besides my admiration for the commitment and enthusiasm, with which the team is doing their work, the small things stick in my mind: the tightly filled fruit basket for everyone, the guitar lesson at the workplace and anecdotes from Azerbaijan.

While the lunch breaks, which were spent with the whole team, I furthermore got impressions of cosy Stockholm coffee places, hipster areas and of the best wrap in town!

What is the story with the cherry blossom picture about? You may find it out by yourself during a journey to Stockholm in spring.

Welche Gründe bewegen Menschen zur Flucht? Können wir als Noch-nie-Geflüchtete darüber reden? Wie werden Grenzen bewacht, welche Legitimation besitzt Frontex und welche Hindernisse erwarten Flüchtinge in der EU? Was geht es mich an und was kann ich tun?

Die Idee war, uns auf dieser Reise mit einem Thema auseinander zu setzen, was bei den meisten von uns im Alltag leider oft zu kurz kommt obwohl wir es für wichtig halten. Um dies zu ermöglichen wollten wir einen offenen und freien Raum jenseits des Alltagslebens schaffen um mit- und voneinander zu lernen. Der Traditionssegler Lovis schien uns der passende Ort dafür – setzt sich die Crew doch schon seit Jahre mit Flüchtlingspolitik auseinander. So kamen 25 junge Erwachsene aus Deutschland und Dänemark zusammen und brachten die unterschiedlichsten Vorkenntnisse mit sich. Einige konnten bereits aktiv in der Flüchtlingshilfe Erfahrungen sammeln, andere waren mit dem Thema nur aus den Tagesmedien vertraut. Genau dies war die Voraussetzung für ein produktives, gemeinsames Lernen.

Lernen und Leben auf engstem Raum, Segeln und Ankern, Anlegen und Segelbergen, Kleingruppenarbeit, Open Space und Diskussion. Unsere Tage wurden zunächst durch das Segeln strukturiert. Beim Segelsetzen oder bei Manövern waren alle gefordert und durften mitanpacken. In den Zwischenzeiten haben wir uns zusammengefunden und inhaltlich gearbeitet. Es gab Kleingruppendiskussionen zu Themen wie FRONTEX oder Klimaflüchtlinge, Input-Referate zu Critical Whiteness und Selbsterfahrungsrunden zur Mainstream-Margin Problematik. Wir haben uns ein Bild der rechtlichen Lage machen können und von aktuellen Beispielen zur Unterstützung von Geflüchteten vor Ort gehört.

Abwechslungsreicher Wochenplan

Neben der inhaltlichen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema haben wir gemeinsam gekocht und gelacht, Ingwer gegen die Seekrankheit gemampft und uns im Klüvernetz die Gischt um die Ohren spritzen lassen. Wir haben von den Skipper_Innen viel über die Situation im Mittelmeer gelernt, aber auch was das Besan oder ein Backstag ist.

Nach dem fünftägigen Segeltörn sind wir gemeinsam nach Hamburg gefahren und haben uns mit der Flüchtlingsarbeit vor Ort auseinander gesetzt. Am Samstag haben wir uns am nationalen Aktionstag von Blocupy unter dem Motto „Solidarity Beyond Borders, Building Democracy From Below“ einer Demonstration in der Hamburger Innenstadt angeschlossen. Am Abend konnten wir im Café Knallhart noch persönlich mit Refugees aus Lampedusa in Kontakt kommen und so die Geschichten von Menschen hören, die das, worüber wir nur theoretisch reden können praktisch erlebt haben – sein Zuhause, die Familie zurücklassen um den Versuch einer Grenzüberquerung in die EU zu wagen.

What are the reasons for people to flee their home? Can we as not having made this experience talk about this? How does the EU secures their borders, what legitimacy does Frontex have and what are the obstacles encountered by refugees in the EU? Why does it affect me and what can I do?

The idea of this journey was to look into a topic, which gets to less attention in our daily life despite the fact that we think it is an urgent and important one. In order to learn from and with each other we wanted to create an open and free learning space beyond our daily life. The traditional sailing boat Lovis seemed the perfect place for this – since the crew is dealing with refugee policies for several years now. Therefor 25 young adults from Germany and Denmark joined the project, all with their different levels of knowledge on the topic. Some were already engaged activists, some know the topic only from news and media. This was the basis for a collective and fruitful learning experience.

Learning and living in a small space, sailing, anchoring, landing and setting the sails, small group work, open space and discussions. Our days were structured by the sailing. For setting the sails or maneuvers, everybody had to help, because only all together we were able to sail the boat. When the wind gave us a break or when we landed in the different harbours we had time to work on the Topic of migration-policy in the EU. We covered a wide range of topics like Frontex, the juridic situation in Europe, climate refuges, Critical Whiteness and the Mainstream-Margin problem were everybody worked on their own experiences. During the last day on the sea we heared about current examples of supporting refugees.

Scedule for the week

Besides dealing with content we cooked together and laughed, chewed ginger against seasickness and felt the wind and the ocean on deck. From the crew members we learned not only how to sail the boat but as well about the situation in the Mediterranean Sea.

After the five-day sailing trip we travelled to Hamburg and joined the Blocupy demonstration under the slogan: „Solidarity Beyond Borders, Building Democracy From Below“. In the evening we were able to meet refugees from Lampedusa in Hamburg. In the “Café Knallhart“ we cooked for them, had the possibility to talk and discuss different topics and played some table-top soccer. The time in Hamburg was a intense mixture of raising our voice in public and getting to know people who actually went throug what we, could only try to grasp – leaving home, family and everything that is valuable to try to cross the european borders.

Weltweit wird jede dritte Frau im Laufe ihres Lebens einmal oder mehrere Male vergewaltigt oder geschlagen. Das sind eine Milliarde Frauen.

ONE BILLION RISING FOR JUSTICE ist ein weltweiter Aufruf an weibliche Überlebende von Gewalt und an diejenigen, die sie leben sich auf öffentlichen Plätzen, an denen sie Gerechtigkeit erfahren können, zu versammeln und dafür einzustehen. Am 14. Februar 2013 haben sich eine Milliarde Menschen in 207 Ländern erhoben und getanzt, um ein Ende der Gewalt gegen Frauen und Mädchen zu fordern.

Auch PreisträgerInnen des Right Livelihood Award arbeiten, um sexuelle Gewalt zu verhindern und Überlebende zu unterstützen. Medica Mondiale, die Organisation von Monika Hauser (RLA 2008) unterstützt Überlebende von sexueller Gewalt in Kriegszeiten uns Konfliktregionen. Weiterhin hat einer der Preisträger von 2013, Dr. Denis Mukwege seine Auszeichnung “…for his courageous work healing women survivors of war-time sexual violence and speaking up about its root causes” bekommen.

Das YFP ruft zu einem Ende von sexueller Gewalt und von Gewalt geben Frauen und Kinder auf. Wir fordern Gerechtigkeit, für jene, die Gewalt und Vergewaltigung erfahren haben und ermutigen Überlebende dazu, die Stille zu brechen!

Wir glauben, dass Liebe und nicht Gewalt die Grundlage sein sollte, auf der wir unsere Partnerschaften und unser Zusammenleben aufbauen!

The YFP supports all those who are rising and invites you to stand up against violence!

Worldwide one out of three women on this planet experiences rape or violence once or often in their life. These are one billion women.

ONE BILLION RISING FOR JUSTICE is a global call to women survivors of violence and those who love them to gather safely in community outside places where they are entitled to justice – and rise for it. On 14 February 2013, one billion people in 207 countries rose and danced to demand an end to violence against women and girls.

Also laureates of the Right Livelihood Award are working to prevent sexual violence and to support survivors of it. Medica Mondiale the organisation of Monika Hauser (RLA 2008) is working to support survivors of sexual violence during wartime and in conflict zones. Moreover one of the laureates from 2013, Dr. Denis Mukwege got the award “…for his courageous work healing women survivors of war-time sexual violence and speaking up about its root causes”.

The YFP calls for an end of sexual violence and for an end of violence against women and girls. We demand justice for those, who experienced violence and rape and we encourage survivors to break the silence.

We think, love and not violence should be the ground on which we base our relationships and our living together!

Review

The last year was dominated by one big project: the Youth Future Conference 2013. After the first Youth Future Conference in 2010 and the Visionaries in Action Conference in 2012, this year’s event was the third of its kind and once again brought together youth leaders from around the world with laureates of the Right Livelihood Award.

The Youth Future Conference 2013 took place in September this year in Bonn. 120 young students from all over Europe came together to discuss the most urgent environmental problems together with laureates of the Right Livelihood Award and the German Environmental Foundation, as well as young experts and scientists. The centerpiece of the conference were the nine workshops on various topics, such as water, energy or soil.

It was a moving and inspiring event, full of energy, action and hope. Around ten projects evolved out of the conference, which are now being coached for another year.

• The average percentage of women was 71%
• 34 nationalities represented at the conference
• 32 staff members, including organizers and workshop hosts
• 100% organic, regional and seasonal food during the conference
• 10 projects developed by participants and supported by the VIA coaching programme
• Facebook posts reached up to 1300 people worldwide
• Participants described the conference as “mind- and view-changing” and “inspiring”

SRS- YFP Report

Based on the “Social Reporting Standard” (SRS), a comprehensive guideline for reporting and monitoring in the non-profit sector, the YFP has just published its second annual report, covering the time from July 2012 to July 2013. This reporting standard has been invented by a group of universities, NGOs and others and is supposed to help non-profit organization in their communication and evaluation. It has internal effects such as evaluating and structuring recent activities, as well as external effects, such as creating transparency, improving communication and helping financial donors to rank and review organizational activities.

This year’s YFP SRS-report has generated a lot of praise and is seen as a Best-Practice Example.

Have a look inside! It gives you an overview of the projects, lists numbers and figures, describes the outcome and impact, looks ahead and illustrates the structure of the organization.

Youth Future Conference follow- up process

Even though the conference is over, the project itself is still running for another year! What are we doing? Well…

1. Coaching:

A big part of the follow-up is been taken up by the Coaching programme. During the conference a couple of projects and ideas developed, that our now being supported for another year. The first meeting already took place in Munich in November. For further information about the projects and their development check out the recent article about the coaching. In 2014 there will also be a series of coaching weekends. The projects learn about fundraising, team work, project management, how to stay motivated for the time of the project and much more.

2. Documentation

To not forget about the conference and the output and impact there will be a filmed documentation as well as a printed version. Those will include images and impressions of the conference, but also show the bigger dimensions of change and are ment to encourage young and old people to step into the ways of Right Livelihood and sustainable development.

3. Finance

For our financial partners and donors we constantly have to keep up book-keeping and finances. Interim finance reports are to be written and tables to be updated. This important and essential work is currently accomplished by Karolin, who has been doing this work for a couple of years now and is looking for a person to take over the division in the long term. Youth Future Project veröffentlich erstmals Wirkungsbericht nach dem Social Reporting Standard

Wer sich mit viel Zeit und Kraft für die Zukunft von Mensch und Erde einsetzt, möchte auch sehen, dass sein Engagement Wirkung hat.

Deswegen haben wir uns im vergangen Jahr intensiv mit der Frage beschäftigt worin eigentlich die Wirkung unseres Vereins besteht.
Welchem gesellschaftlichen Problem stellen wir uns eigentlich? Wie sieht unsere Strategie aus?
Welche Mittel und Ressourcen setzen wir ein, um auf unsere Weise einen Beitrag zum gesellschaftlichen Wandel zu leisten?

All das haben wir in unserem ersten Jahresbericht für den Zeitraum Juli 2012-Juli 2013 nun aufgeschrieben. Und zwar nicht einfach irgendwie, sondern nach den Vorgaben des „Social Reporting Standards“. Dank Benjamin’s Förderung im Ashoka-Stipendienprogramm „Engagement mit Perspektive“ ist der Bericht nun im ansprechenden Design fertig geworden.

Der Social Reporting Standard (SRS)

Um Sozialunternehmer und andere soziale Projekte und Organisationen in die Lage zu versetzen, ihre Wirkung zu dokumentieren und Spendern, Investoren und Interessierten über ihre Fortschritte zu berichten, wurde dieser Berichtsstandard von führenden Organisationen aus der Social-Entrepreneur-Landschaft entwickelt.

Zahlreiche Sozialunternehmer haben diesen Standard getestet und mitentwickelt, um ein umfassendes und transparentes Bild ihrer Ressourcen, ihrer Leistungen und der damit erzielten gesellschaftlichen Veränderung zu erstellen. Dieser Leitfaden ist das wesentliche Werkzeug zur Nutzung des Standards.

Im September gab die Right-Livelihood-Award-Stiftung die diesjährigen Preisträger bekannt. Die Preisverleihung fand am 2. Dezember im schwedischen Parlament in Stockholm statt. Die Preisträger sind:

• Paul Walker (USA), „…für die unermüdliche Arbeit für eine Welt ohne chemische Waffen”
• RajiSourani (Palästina), „…für sein beharrliches Engagement für Rechtsstaatlichkeit und Menschenrechte unter außergewöhnlich schwierigen Bedingungen.“
• Denis Mukwege (Demokratische Republik Kongo), „…für seinen Einsatz in der Behandlung von Frauen, die sexuelle Gewalt im Krieg überlebt haben, und seinen Mut, die Grundursachen anzusprechen.“
• Hans Herren / Stiftung Biovision (Schweiz), „…für sein Know-how und seine Pionierarbeit in der Förderung einer gesicherten, geschützten und nachhaltigen weltweiten Nahrungsmittelversorgung.“

Das Youth Future Project gratuliert den Preisträgern herzlich und wünscht ihnen alles Gute für ihre Arbeit. Wir freuen uns auf weitere gemeinsame Projekte!

Zu den Gästen der Preisverleihung zählte auch die vierköpfige Youth-Future-Project-Delegation (Carla Duvenhorst, Alexander Capistran, Philipp Baum, Norina Möller). Die Delegation nutzte die Gelegenheit, um die Preisträger und viele andere interessante Wegbereiter für den Wandel aus der ganzen Welt kennenzulernen. Nachstehend findet ihr – teilweise kritische – Kommentare einiger Mitglieder der Delegation insbesondere zum Ablauf der Preisverleihung:

„Ich glaube, dass wir uns alle in der schwierigen Situation befinden, inwieweit wir an Altbewährtem festhalten und ab wann wir neue Wege einschlagen wollen. Normalerweise nehme ich an offiziellen Veranstaltungen wie der Preisverleihung des Right Livelihood Awards nicht teil und fand den Rahmen, in dem sie stattfand, ziemlich interessant. Dennoch frage ich mich weiterhin, ob es richtig ist, die Mittel und Wege der Mainstream-Gesellschaft zu übernehmen, um die Welt zu ändern. Dunkle Anzüge und Reden vor dem Parlament stehen für mich in der Tradition des alten, weißen europäischen Patriarchats. Ich würde gern einmal an einer Veranstaltung mit einer anderen Gestaltung der Feierlichkeiten teilnehmen. Trotzdem bin ich dem RLA, den Preisträgern und allen Beteiligten für die geleistete Arbeit und für ihr Engagement zum Wohl ihrer Mitmenschen dankbar“, Philipp B.

„Es war eine gute Möglichkeit, um sich wieder auf den RLA einzustimmen, aber es zeigte auch das offensichtliche Potential einer projektbasierten Kooperation zwischen uns. Jedenfalls mehr als bislang. Oder vielleicht verleihen ja einige junge Mitglieder des Youth Future Project den Award im nächsten Jahr? Die Preisverleihung war auf jeden Fall voll von Sorgfalt und Hingabe…,“ Alexander C.

„Stockholm war eine wunderbare Gelegenheit, um dem Youth Future Project ein Gesicht zu verleihen und ein Jugendnetzwerk bekannt zu machen. Viele Teilnehmer der Preisverleihung kannten uns nicht und waren von unserer Arbeit äußerst beeindruckt. Außerdem besuchten wir das Büro des Right Livelihood Award, um die Mitarbeiter kennenzulernen und mit ihnen über eine zukünftige Zusammenarbeit zu sprechen. Allerdings hat mich der formelle Rahmen der Preisverleihung überrascht und auch, wie sehr sich der Geist von Veränderung und Hoffnung darin verliert“, Norina M.

In September, the Right Livelihood Award Foundation announced this year’s laureates. The ceremony took place in the Swedish parliament in Stockholm on 2^nd December. The laureates are:

• Paul Walker (USA), “…for working tirelessly to rid the world of chemical weapons.”
• Raji Sourani (Palestine), „…for his unwavering dedication to the rule of law and human rights under exceptionally difficult circumstances”.
• Denis Mukwege (Democratic Republic of Congo), “…for his courageous work healing women survivors of war-time sexual violence and speaking up about its root causes”.
• Hans Herren / Biovision Foundation (Switzerland), “…for his expertise and pioneering work in promoting a safe, secure and sustainable global food supply”.

Also attending the ceremony was a four-headed Youth Future Project delegation (Carla Duvenhorst, Alexander Capistran, Philipp Baum, Norina Möller). The delegation used this opportunity to get to know the laureates and many other interesting change makers from all over the world. Below you can find some –partly critical lines, mostly concerning the setup of the ceremony- from some members of the delegation:

“I think we all are in the difficult situation how much we want to participate in the old ways and where we want to part with them. I don’t usually attend official meetings like the Right Livelihood Award Ceremony and found it quite interesting to experience the way it took place. I am, however still wondering if it’s good to copy the ways of mainstream society if you want to change something in the world. Wearing dark suits and holding speeches in a parliament is the culture of old, white European patriarchy to me. I would love to attend a festive occasion with different forms of celebration sometime. Nevertheless, I am grateful to the RLA, the laureates and everyone being there for the work you’re doing and that you care so much about the well-being of your fellow human beings!“, Philipp B.

“It was a quite good opportunity to get tuned to the RLA again, but also showed the apparent potential lying in a very project-based cooperation between them and us. More than up to now at least. Or maybe some young member of the YFP will hand over the award certificates next year? The ceremony, however, was full of care and dedication…”, Alexander C.

“Stockholm was an amazing opportunity to give the Youth Future Project a face and to spread the word of a Youth Network. Many attendees of the ceremony didn´t know about us and were deeply amazed by our work. We also stopped by the Right Livelihood Award bureau to get to know the staff and to talk about future cooperation. Nevertheless, I was surprised by the formal setup of the ceremony and how much the spirit of change and hope is getting lost within these patterns.”, Norina M.
